Tazio Nuvolari and The Stag
This painting covers one of the most amazing stories about Tazio Nuvolari. During practice for the 1938 Donington Grand Prix, Tazio hit a stag that wandered onto the track at McLean's at 80mph. Tazio hurt his ribs, and was bandaged for the rest of the race meeting. He went on to put his Auto Union second on the grid, just 0.2 seconds adrift of the Mercedes of Hermann Lang. The deer's head was stuffed and sent home as a trophy, and placed on display in Mantua.If that wasn't enough, in the race itself, he made a lead of 14 seconds before a very long pitstop dropped him down the field to 4th place.When he rejoined, a car lost oil in front of him, Tazio went off and rejoined at the hairpin. Nuvolari stopped for more tyres and joined in third behind Lang and Muller. He was several seconds a lap faster than them, and passed them both to win by 1m 48s! A truly amazing driver.
